West Midlands Regional Prison Performance 2010

The review process has now closed and the summary of indicators from the Prisons in the West Midlands is available.  A national summary will be compiled on behalf of the Department of Health and published in the Summer. The review process in 2010

There were a number of changes for the indicators in 2010. Three additional indicators have been included:

  • 1.30 A summary indicator for delayed mental health transfers
  • 1.31 An indicator for Learning Disability Services &
  • 1.34 An indicator for Hepatitis C screening and services

Minor changes have been made to 1.18 Prison Dentistry and 1.33 Hep B Vaccination.  Changes have also been made to the quarterly mental health data set, adding in two new indicators. All the reference material has been reviewed and updated.

Verification Process

In 2010 the West Midlands Prison Health Commissioners verified the integrity of the data.  For details of how this was achieved please contact the individual prison health commissioner.  The verification process was monitored by NHS West Midlands.

Prison Health Performance and Quality Indicators 2009

The Department of Health have taken the data from all the Prison Health Performance and Quality Indicator reviews and provided a summary for each region, with comparisons for each prison type.  This allows prisons and PCTs to compare their prison health performance and quality with comparator prisons from across the country.

Across England we have attempted to standardise the assessment process, ensuring all reviews were undertaken across the country to a similar level.  This was the first year of completing this and we believe there are lessons to be learnt.  The initial analysis shows that the West Midlands is below average, in terms of performance, and only has one prison above the national average.  We believe the principle cause of this is a failure to standardise different regional assessments.  We will work with colleagues across regions to improve this for the future.
