GP & Medical Roles

 

General Practitioner's and medical input into care is a crucial part of any prison based healthcare service

Prison teams often employ GP's with Specialist Interests (GPwSi's) and Lead GP's to manage patients primary care needs and psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists to manage mental health needs

Responsibilities often include;

  • Carrying out consultations, medical investigations and treating patients to the highest standard, appropriate to their need
  • Providing high quality medical services to the prison population, being the first point of contact for patients if required
  • Contributing to the development of healthcare services
  • Preparing reports for prison authorities, courts and other agencies upon request
  • Having an extensive knowledge of medical conditions to be able to assess a patient and decide on an appropriate course of action
